MassDevelopment today announced the sale of two parcels of land at Devens. Kurt Macnamara and partner James M. Benson - through their company Devens Recycling Center LLC (DRC) - is purchasing an 11-acre lot in Devens' West Rail Industrial Park to build a 90,000-square-foot construction and demolition debris recycling facility. Framingham-based Cambrooke Foods, a manufacturer of specialized medical foods, has purchased a 3-acre parcel in Devens' Barnum Road Business District to construct a 45,000-square-foot office, R&D and light manufacturing facility. Together, these businesses will create 75 jobs with the potential for more new jobs in the coming years.

"This is great news for Devens and the regional economy in north central Massachusetts," said Robert L. Culver, MassDevelopment president/CEO. "DRC and Cambrooke bring two new businesses to join Devens' rapidly growing commercial and industrial centers. One will have a tangible impact on our environment while the other will help patients with certain medical disorders. I'm glad these cutting-edge firms recognized the benefit of doing business at Devens, and I can't wait to welcome them in person."

DRC's solid waste recycling facility can process 1,500 tons of brick, concrete, steel, wood, asphalt, carpet and gypsum each day. The majority of these materials will be returned to market as recycled products including wood fuel, asphalt and pot-hole patch. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to be an industry leader, and it will play a major role in helping Bay State developers meet the state Department of Environmental Protection's newly passed regulations prohibiting the disposal of these materials in the Commonwealth's already overburdened landfills. This project will result in the creation of 50 jobs with the possible addition of more positions once a maintenance shift is established.

"When finished, our new facility will be a model for solid waste recycling plants nationwide, and we're very pleased to be doing business in Devens," said Kurt Macnamara, principal of Devens Recycling Center, LLC. "Thanks to MassDevelopment and the Devens Enterprise Commission for working with us to help make this project a reality in a thorough and expeditious manner."

Cambrooke Foods manufactures special medical foods for patients with inborn errors of protein metabolism and renal disease. Specifically, the company produces foods that replace naturally occurring proteins with amino acids required to sustain life. David and Lynn Paolella founded the firm in January 2000 to combat a protein disorder inherited by two of the couple's three children. Cambrooke's expansion will enable the firm to enter new markets and begin manufacturing new products, and it will result in the immediate creation of 15 to 20 jobs in nutrition, manufacturing and sales.

"Obviously, this expansion effort is near and dear to my heart, and I know I speak for my entire team when I say we're excited to open our new facility at Devens," said Lynn Paolella, Cambrooke Foods president. "MassDevelopment recognized the importance of our work not only for the positive impact our products provide for people living with these medical conditions in America and other countries, but also because high-tech firms like ours are poised for major growth and job creation in the near future."

MassDevelopment, the state's finance and development authority, works with businesses, financial institutions and local officials to stimulate economic growth across the Commonwealth. In fiscal year 2005, MassDevelopment financed or managed 158 projects statewide representing an investment of nearly $1.9 billion in the Massachusetts economy. These projects are supporting the creation of 2,769 housing units and more than 9,800 jobs: 4,702 permanent and 5,100 construction-related.
