Culver and U.S. Postal Service officials to showcase a new zip code for the Devens community. The USPS assigned the code, 01434; and Devens residents and businesses began using their new zip last week. "This is big news for both the residents and businesses at Devens," said Culver. "For years, people living or doing business at Devens shared a zip code with Ayer. This impeded business interactions, complicated everyday tasks like establishing telephone service and more critical ones like getting tax bills and sending payments on time. I'm happy to say those days are over at Devens." Area residents and business leaders worked with Congressman Meehan, Senators Kennedy and Kerry, State Senator Resor and the MassDevelopment team to advocate for the new zip code. The cooperative effort points to the importance of Devens as a magnet for economic growth in the Commonwealth's north central region. "When I came to understand the economic significance of designating a new zip code for Devens, I was happy to work with all the involved players to get the job done," said Mike Powers, Massachusetts district manager for the United States Postal Service. When the Army closed its regional headquarters at Devens in 1991, the USPS retired the zip code and stopped all deliveries to the former base. For some, the designation of a new zip code for Devens signifies yet another step toward the creation of a revitalized community from what had become a ghost town. "This new zip code allows businesses and residents of Devens to conduct commerce in a timely fashion, it eliminates the confusion of sharing another town's postal code and adds another characterizing element to the growing Devens community," explained Congressman Meehan. "I'm happy to have helped with the project." MassDevelopment, the state's economic development authority, works with businesses and local officials to provide the financial tools and real estate expertise needed to stimulate economic growth across Massachusetts. In fiscal year 2003, MassDevelopment financed $860 million in projects statewide, resulting in the creation of more than 5,300 jobs, the retention of nearly 26,000 jobs, and 4,000 new housing starts. |
