Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
July 22, 2006: The Springfield Republican, Editorial

(UP) Hot Mama's Foods is adding a little spice - and 40 jobs - to the Springfield market next month with its move into a 23,000-square-foot plant at 134 Avocado St.

The maker of salsa, hummus and sauces has outgrown its smaller leased space in Northampton and was looking for a bigger facility - and we're pleased that it chose Springfield rather than moving out of state. The Avocado Street facility, which has been vacant for about a year, formerly housed Hatfield Quality Meats.

Hot Mama's move was accomplished with a $1 million commercial mortgage loan that includes $730,800 from The Bank of Western Massachusetts and $313,200 from the state agency MassDevelopment, plus a mortgage insurance guarantee from MassDevelopment.

Hot Mama's, which projects sales of $8 million this year, makes private label foods for Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, among others.

We're pleased that Hot Mama's is investing in the Springfield market. And wouldn't it be nice for local food lovers if Trader Joe's and Whole Foods set up new shops closer to their supplier?
