Boston Redevelopment Authority Director Mark Maloney joined with Central Boston Elder Services (CBES) Board President Perry Smith and Executive Director Catherine Hardaway to celebrate the groundbreaking for the program's new headquarters on Washington Street in Dudley Square. They were joined by MassDevelopment Chief Operating Officer Nancy Howard, Boston Private Bank & Trust representative Jim Brown, and a host of civic leaders and community members to mark the occasion. The groundbreaking is a significant milestone for the 30-year-old organization and for the Dudley Square neighborhood, which will become the agency's new home in the spring of 2005.

"Central Boston Elder Services is an enthusiastic and very welcomed pioneer in the Dudley Square neighborhood. By bringing their headquarters here, they are illustrating their commitment to this neighborhood. They are making themselves part of the solution for neighborhood revitalization in the City of Boston," said Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

"CBES is excited about becoming a property owner and part of the Roxbury community, while aiding in the redevelopment and revitalization of Dudley Square," said CBES Executive Director Catherine Hardaway.

Plans for the new building include 24,000 square feet of multipurpose, state-of-the art office and retail space that will enable CBES to better serve the growing population of elders in Boston. Their mission is to support elder self-sufficiency in their own homes by providing short and long term care. CBES promotes elder independence through a variety of in-house services.

The CBES project was made possible by a $3.4 million tax-exempt bond issued by the Boston Industrial Finance Agency (BIDFA), the BRA-affiliated board that promotes economic growth and increased employment in the City of Boston by issuing bonds that finance the capital needs of the city's businesses and institutions.

"CBES is a great example of the tools the BRA and City of Boston can use to create real economic development and growth opportunities both for institutions, like CBES, and for neighborhoods, like Dudley Square. We are proud to be part of this important project," said BRA Director Mark Maloney.

MassDevelopment has also provided a $579,000 mortgage insurance guarantee for the $9.4 million project.

"Helping agencies like this one expand essential services is a vital part of our mission," said Nancy Howard, chief operating officer at MassDevelopment. "Being able to support Central Boston Elder Services with a creative financing package is especially important because the work they do supports so many."
