Located in Central Massachusetts, Devens is a 4,400 acre mixed-use community and an award winning model for military base reuse. After serving as the U.S. Army’s New England headquarters for 79 years, Fort Devens was closed in 1996. With financial support from the state Legislature, MassDevelopment purchased the property and is redeveloping Devens into a sustainable and diverse mixed-use community. Stimulating economic activity and job creation are key goals. Since the base closed, MassDevelopment has attracted more than 80 businesses and $1.6 billion in capital investment from companies – American Superconductor, Bristol Myers-Squibb, and Evergreen Solar among them – that collectively employ more than 3,500 workers. With nearly 2,100 acres of open space and recreation land, Devens offers unique opportunities for active and passive recreation. Carefully planned progress and a multitude of first-class amenities have made Devens a popular place to live, work, and play.
