NEW BEDFORD — The groundbreaking of Riverside Landing, a 17 acre retail and mixed-use development located off Coggeshall Street in New Bedford whose anchor tenant will include the area's first Market Basket Supermarket, was celebrated Friday.

On hand for the event were New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang, Gov.Deval Patrick, Lt. Gov.Timothy Murray, Secretary of the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development Greg Bialecki, President and CEO of MassDevelopment Robert Culver and Market Basket President and CEO Arthur T. Demoulas

“Market Basket ranks in the Top 10 grocery stores in the United States,” said Lang. “Market Basket will be a great value grocery store for the families of New Bedford. Market Basket is a well known price leader throughout New England. The store is family owned and is much attuned to the community of New Bedford.”

Demoulas said in addition to construction jobs, the New Bedford Market Basket will create approximately 500 new jobs in the city.

“We are delighted and excited for the opportunity to introduce Market Basket to the people of the New Bedford community. Our thanks go to Mayor Lang and his economic development team for working with us on this project, and we look forward to the future revitalization of such an important location in the city,” DeMoulas.

“It is important is these trying economic times that government at all levels directs its attention to creating jobs and offering value to its citizens. Market Basket will not only create important jobs and opportunities for many people, but will deliver consistent savings and value to our customers. We look forward to being part of the New Bedford community.”

The 95,000-square-foot store's opening is planned for spring or summer 2010.
