Deputy Fire Chief (Devens, MA)

MassDevelopment’s Devens Fire Department is accepting applications and resumes for the position of Deputy Fire Chief, schedule - Monday through Friday (40 hours per week). This is a non-union position.

Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief shall supervise work in directing firefighting activities and maintaining fire department property and equipment; this includes personal participation in any phase of operations. The Deputy Fire Chief shall work with Devens residents, industry, the U.S. Army, Federal Bureau of Prisons, and officers of the department to coordinate inspections, drills, and responses to alarms. Primary functions for the position include the directing, coordinating, developing, and supervising all fire department personnel, mitigating hazardous materials incidents, and responding to motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and all other emergencies. The Deputy Fire Chief shall be an Operations or Safety Officer and shall do so in accordance with the Chief’s guidelines. In addition, the position will require overseeing all training, EMS coordination, and fire prevention programs of the Devens Fire Department.

Minimum requirements:

  • Massachusetts EMT B certification;
  • FF I/II certification;
  • Meet and maintain the qualifications and skills as defined in NFPA 1021: Standard for Professional Fire Officer Qualifications, most recent Edition - Chapter 5 Officer II. Fire Officer II Pro Board Certification;
  • Certification or Credentialing as a Fire Prevention Officer/Inspector I;
  • Pro Board Certification Fire Instructor I;
  • ICS 200 certification;
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license;
  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Administrative and computer skills, including experience in Microsoft Office.

Preferred:

  • Residency within 10 miles of Devens.

Requirements:
The ideal candidate(s) will be a graduate from the Massachusetts Fire Fighting Academy Recruit training program with 10 years experience as a Professional Firefighter with a minimum of three years in a supervisory role. The Candidate will have Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer III, Fire Prevention Officer/Inspector II, ICS 300. An associate or bachelor’s degree in fire science is preferred but not required.
