MassDevelopment awards $150K to Winchendon for brewery

September 22, 2021 : Worcester Business Journal, by Monica Benevides

MassDevelopment has awarded $150,200 from the Brownfields Redevelopment Fund to the Town of Winchendon to help remediate 1.333 acres at 4 Summer Drive, where Bull Spit Brewing Co. of Lancaster hopes to open a second location.

The property in question, owned by the town, previously housed an iron foundry operated by the Baxter D. Whitney & Son Machine Shop & Foundry, which ceased operations at the location in 1947.

Per MassDevelopment, there are several environmental concerns related to site soil and structures, although the foundry was removed when the plant shut down.

Bull Spit plans to purchase the property for its expansion, but that sale is contingent on addressing environmental contaminants, according to MassDevelopment. Owner Keith Kopley plans to create up to 20 new jobs at the new location over three years, and the project is slated to include a community and event space on the property.
